What is a well?

A well is a hole drilled in the ground in order to access water. It uses a pump and pipes to pull the water into your house. The well also screens out dirt/sand and other unwanted particles that could clog your pipes.

TYPES OF WELLS

There are two basic types of wells that you see, including:

  1. Shallow wells: These are normally bored wells and are less than 100 feet deep.
  2. Deep wells: These wells are normally 250 feet deep on average and sometimes have to go through rock to get to water.

Well Construction

The first step in constructing a well is to find the right location for it. You will need to look at the size of the area, the proximity to property lines, and the proximity to things that could contaminate the water in the well.

Next comes the actual drilling of the well. Installing a well should be done by professionals to ensure that your well is sound and properly installed.

After the well is drilled then the casing will be installed. The casing can be made of steel or plastic. Then they will install the well screens. These are meant to allow water to flow into the well but keep out sand, dirt and other particles that you don’t want in your water.

The next step is grouting the well. This means that cement is poured between the casing and the wall of the drilled well. This helps seal the water from contaminants from the surface.

The well pump and pressure tank will also be installed so that water can be properly pumped up into your house. Read more about choosing a well pump HERE.

The last step is making sure your well is working properly and that just involves testing it out. We will make sure you have water to all areas of your house and that the water isn’t showing signs of debris or contamination.
