What is Well Construction?

Greensboro gets its water from Lake Townsend, Lake Brandt, and Lake Higgins. Lake Higgins is used as a backup water source to refill the other lakes when needed. Water from Lake Brandt is set to Mitchell Water Plant for treatment and water from Lake Townsend is sent to Townsend Water Plant.
The treatment process includes the following steps:
- First the water is pretreated. For Lake Brandt water this means that they use Liquid Sodium Permanganate to help get rid of Manganese, Iron and other things from the water. Then this water is taken to the treatment plant. At Lake Townsend pretreatment is done by using hypochlorite.
- Next the water goes through coagulation and flocculation. These terms sound intimidating but let’s break them down a little. Coagulation means that they add Ferric Sulfate to the water and then mix it. This causes the smaller particles in the water to come together to form larger particles which can then be filtered out of the water. Without this step these smaller particles would not be able to be filtered out. These could cause cloudy or smelly water. This also helps absorb some of the other things that we don’t want in our water.
- Next comes the flocculation. This means that the water is mixed again to cause the bigger particles created during coagulation to form larger particles. These then become visible in the water.
- Then they move on to the sedimentation process. This allows the removal of the particles by allowing them to settle. Then the settled particles can be easily removed from the water.
- The next step is the filtration of the water. These filters remove solids from the water. The water goes through a series of different filters. Once water has finished all of the filtration process it goes into a storage tank. When it leaves here is goes through stabilization. Stabilization helps reduce corrosion in water pipes.
- Now the water goes through fluoridation. This is when fluoride is added to the water as recommended by public health associations.
- Then chlorine is added to the water. This is used as a disinfectant for the water. The second form of disinfectant is known as chloraminations. This helps keep the water safe for drinking.
- After the addition of some additional filtering chemicals, the water is ready to be distributed to customers.
