September 7, 2018Choosing a Sump Pump
Choosing a new sump pump for your home can be a little daunting. With such a technical piece of equipment, it can be hard to know what features to look for, and what a fair price is for each style of pump.
There are two types of residential sump pumps – the pedestal and the submersible style pump. Submersible pumps are a little more common, and in these style pumps, the motor is located inside the unit. This configuration protects it against electrical issues, but can make repairs a little trickier. Generally, these pumps last anywhere from 5-15 years, but should be serviced routinely to keep them working efficiently beyond the 7-year mark. They do not clog as easily as the pedestal pump, which means they can generally run on their own, without any assistance from the homeowner or interruptions due to debris buildup.
The pedestal pump is a little different. The motor on this style sump pump is located on the outside of the apparatus, which means it can be serviced a little easier. These pumps tend to last longer, but they aren’t as efficient, and they have a tough time handling large quantities of water. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain, this pump may not be powerful enough to keep your basement dry.
